I have spent fifteen hours during this semester observing a fourth grade classroom at P.S 12; James B. Colgate School Elementary School in Woodside, NY. The math class meets Monday through Friday from 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm. I did not have any prior direct experience in the math classroom, so this was relatively a new learning experience. Having done my schooling in Bangladesh, I have always wondered about the teaching process and the different instructional strategies of learning math in the United States. As I observed this particular math class as a part of my assignment, I not only had a great time but I had a better understanding of how math class goes in the United States. I was also amazed to see the classroom setting and the†¦show more content†¦I noticed that in the rear of the classroom, there was a huge shelf containing many books organized in different levels like scholastic and science magazines, fiction, non-fiction, kids discover, national geographic world and so on. Throughout the class, there were some hanging instructions on how to take good notes, how to be a good listener, and how to nurture positive behavior. There was a shelf containing different categories of manipulative that include - multi-colored counters, pattern blocks, dollars and coins, time chart, measuring cups and spoons, mea sure scale, everyday math decks, 3-D shapes, flats, longs, and cubes. I also noticed that there were some interesting charts hanging in the wall. One of those are following: Math word wall (CUBES strategy for solving math word problems) C Circle the numbers U Underline the question B Box important fact or details E Evaluate how (+-*/) you will solve. - How many steps? S Solve the problem/ Check for errors. Ms. F would begin the afternoon lesson by reviewing the assigned homework from the previous day. She would present the solution on the smart board to allow students compare to their findings. In between, she would ask students to explain the steps they used to solve the specific math problem. The Over Baked Marijuana Debate Arnold Schwarzenegger once said, â€Å"That is not a drug. It’s a leaf.† The leaf he was referring to is marijuana. Skeptics view marijuana as a hazard to society and the well-being of our country’s people. Although, for others it is a solution to their disease. This kind of marijuana is medical marijuana, and it has the ability to provide relief to many, if only it was fully supported. However, there are many debates over whether or not medical marijuana should be legalized. Essentially, marijuana is a plant with leaves like any other plant (Blachford 267). What sets it apart is tetrahydrocannabinol, otherwise known as THC. This component is responsible for the psychological effects of marijuana (Gerdes 89). An initial evaluation of its usefulness earns marijuana to be classified as a schedule I drug, meaning there is no valued medical use and it’s highly abusive (Dresser web). Although, in the past, the Food and Drug Administration allowed AID patients to use it because it was their last hope (Stempsey web). Then in 1937, marijuana was made completely illegal. Illegalization of the substance was enacted by the Marijuana Tax Act, which also made marijuana for medical purposes illegal (Blachford 265). Some states in 1996 tried to combat its illegal status by proposing propositions to allow prescribed marijuana usage, but it was denied (Dresser web). Poem Africa free essay sample

The entire poem is a extended metaphor to describe Africa as this beautiful woman who is going through devastating changes to her homeland. In Maya Angelous poem â€Å"Africa†, the speaker portrays the country as this African American woman. The speaker uses metaphors and imagery of a woman’s body and Africa’s landscape throughout the poem starting in the first stanza. Thus she had lain,(1) sugar cane sweet (2) deserts her hair (3) golden her feet (4) mountains her breast (5) two Niles her tears (6) Notice how the speaker uses mountains portraying a woman breast, probably because mountains are big and are eye catching, and a womans breast is one of her most valued and viewed body parts. The speaker uses the Nile River as her tears of pain that she is enduring. There is a lot of pain and anguish brought out through the poem. The speaker says â€Å"her screams loud and vain, her history slain† (lines 21,23). The woman gets upset because she remembers her pain and she takes a moment and screams loud and vain, but she continues to rise. In this stanza the structure is the most different, where the lines run five to six syllables. There is no sort of pattern and every other line is still rhyming, which helps you to read the stanzas without pausing or hesitation. Maybe this stanza is different because this is where the country remembers all the pain it went through. The poem tone changes throughout from beginning to end. It goes from being cheerful to displeasing. thus she had lain, sugar cane sweet/ to â€Å"now she is rising, remember her pain, remember the losses, her screams loud and vain† (1-2, 18-21). Her screams loud and vain suggest that Africa was devastated when her young daughter’s and sons were taken from their homeland. After reading the poem, it makes you wonder, why did the speaker chose to compare Africa to a woman? Why not a man? Is it because a woman physicall y goes through more pain than a man like giving child birth? Or is it because the speaker could reach the audience to be more sympathetically? Slowly throughout the poem africa is regaining her strength from the devastation she has faced: thus she had lain (8) now she is rising (18) now she is striding (24) Africa is remembering the losses it had, so its bringing back pain, burt the speaker always reassures the audience with one line, â€Å"thus she had lain† (1,7,17,). The speaker uses this line four times throughout the piece, but the last time its used it changes to â€Å"although she had lain† (25). It reminds the audience even though she has had tribulations, she slowly becomes stronger regaining her strength.
